Tokushima Prefecture tour

Today we went on a longer tour of the area, beginning by driving about 40 minutes over a steep mountain pass to the next valley. Here is the Awa Washi paper factory. The papers are great- they sell them in the US but they are much cheaper here at the source, I may use some for whatever project I do here. The factory is near the town of Donari, which seems to be part of a sprawling area that follows the Yoshino river along to the south of Tokushima. Long flat areas of ugly buildings and roads and wires.

After the paper factory we drove back up the hills to a special udon place. It was great udon, made fresh there, and also little crabs from the river fried whole.

In the afternoon we went to the Indigo Museum, which is in the preserved compound of an indigo merchant from around 1800. They have little dioramas and such everywhere explaining the indigo process, and then we got to each make our own little indigo dyed handkerchief. The home of the indigo merchant is a huge mansion (Japanese style).
