There is a local man who is an expert with natural dyes, and he organizes special dyeing workshops. On Thursday all day, I was partially working on my work in the studio and partially watching and helping- the studio I am using next to my house is kind of an open space for various people to use, and it has many rooms. They set up two vats of dye, one boiling a certain type of oak leaf, another made from a different plant which I could not figure out. The linen noren are the hanging fabrics which go in the door of a shop or house. The patterns are made by a tie-dyeing technique. They are submerged in the hot dyes, then in stopping solution, then the dyes again, then rinsed and untied to reveal beautiful subtle patterns. They brought a big lunch along and afterwards gave me the left over dyes to try on my own.
