Yesterday while I was working in the studio two local women stopped by- they are local artists who are involved in the artist in residence program. They said “time to go see bonsai” so I stopped work and we drove over to a house on the hillside down the river. It is a beautiful place to live full of art, with tatami room that open up to a view across the valley to the next mountains. The owner, whose name I missed, showed us around and showed us his bonsai collection. He has tons of bonsai, some on display and then a whole collection lined up on tables outside in the back of the house. His wife, by contrast, has a more ‘western style” taste and has big pots pull of very healthy looking geraniums and impatiens. We had tea and small cakes on the veranda looking out at bonsai and mountains and contemplated the bonsai (or at least I did- its easy to be contemplative when you can’t participate in the conversation- amazingly liberating to not know what is being said!).

bonsai are small and cute, so are baby seals...so why aren't there baby seals in the bonsai garden?
So contemplation means not knowing what is going on. I like it.
