I'm making an installation using rice straw in this space, and I'm also making a big installation also using rice straw as well as video projection in the high school gym (actually the budokan- martial arts hall). I'll post pics as they develop. People don't have an idea of what they want per se, and if they did that would be frustrating for me and might lead to some kind of stunted work. On the other hand, they have a lot of expectations and ideas based on their experience with previous artists, so for instance they were kind of expecting me to do an outdoor installation, which is great, but if I had decided not to do it they might have been disappointed. They are incredibly generous, helpful, and involved. I think some of the ideas of contemporary art- doing a video installation, site specific work, etc- that I am working with, are still a little new to some of them but they seem genuinely excited for something unusual and are supporting it whole heartedly. Others have a lot of exposure to art especially through this program so they have some ideas already of some of the things artists have done in the past and which I might do.

What exactly are you doing? Does the community have a vision for what they would like, or are you pretty free?
